Although being born in Lithuania does not grant citizenship, every child born here must be registered regardless of their nationality. This is especially important for children from mixed families, ensuring their diverse heritage is acknowledged. Registering the birth is essential, as it is the only way for your child to receive a personal identification number and apply for benefits if eligible in Lithuania. You must report your child's birth within three months of their birth date. The sooner you register, the sooner you will be able to receive services and benefits related to the birth of your child. Here's how you can register your child's birth:
You have two options for submitting the birth registration application:
If the parents are married, either parent can submit the documents. If the parents are not married, both must be present to register the birth. Once the birth is registered and your child has a personal identification number, you can apply to your country’s consulate to obtain your child's citizenship. After securing citizenship, you can apply for your child's residence permit in Lithuania.
The child's name and surname are recorded in the population register at the time of birth registration.
