Elections

In Lithuania, there are four types of elections: parliamentary elections for the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania, presidential elections, municipal elections, and elections to the European Parliament. Each type of election follows its own set of rules, making sure that everyone who is eligible has a fair chance to vote or run as a candidate. This keeps democracy strong at every level of government.

Local Elections

  • Who Can Vote: If you're over 18 and a permanent resident of a municipality, you have the right to vote in City Municipality Council and Mayor elections
  • Who Can Run for Office: If you're a foreigner over 20 with a permanent residence permit in Lithuania, you can run for a seat on the City Municipality Council. However, you cannot run if your voting rights have been restricted by a court in your home country. Only Lithuanian citizens are eligible to run for the position of Mayor

European Parliament Elections

  • Who Can Vote: Lithuanian citizens and permanent residents from other EU member states can vote in European Parliament elections. This excludes those who have lost their voting rights in their home countries
  • Who Can Run for Office: The same rules apply for running as a candidate in the European Parliament elections

National Elections

  • Lithuanian Parliament and President: Only Lithuanian citizens can vote or run for the Lithuanian Parliament (Seimas) and the Presidency. Foreigners do not have the right to participate in these elections as candidates.
