Driving Exams

If you're looking to get your driver's license in Lithuania, you'll need to pass both the written and practical driving exams at Regitra. These exams will assess how well you know the traffic rules and whether you're ready to drive safely on the road.

Driving school

First, you'll need to complete 30 mandatory hours of practical driving lessons (for category B licenses) at a driving school. The cost of driving courses varies depending on a few factors: whether you choose to learn with an automatic or manual transmission, the language of instruction, and whether you decide to prepare for the theory exam on your own or with the school's help. Many driving schools in Lithuania offer services in English or Russian.  Some of the top driving schools in Lithuania, such as ARV Auto, Rigveda and Dorkanas, offer courses in English ranging from €500 to €600.

Exams at Regitra

To sign up for the exams at Regitra and obtain your Lithuanian driver's license, you must be a resident of Lithuania. This means you need to have officially declared your place of residence in the country. Unfortunately, if you only hold a visa in Lithuania, you won't be eligible to take the driving exam.

Make sure to get a health certificate and complete first aid training beforehand. You can prepare for the theory exam on your own or with help from a driving school, and if necessary, you can even take the exam with an interpreter.

Theory test (written)

If you are preparing for the exam on your own, purchase the latest Traffic Rules booklet and read it carefully. This publication can be bought at various press outlets (bookstores, shopping centers, online). It contains the necessary theory and illustrations of the road signs and markings. To prepare effectively, you should also practice by taking tests. Popular test websites include KET bilietai, Alsket, ARV Testai, and others. You should only register for the exam with Regitra when you feel confident solving the tests and consistently achieve more than 90% correct answers. You can practice by taking a mock exam on the Regitra website

If you are preparing for the exam at a driving school, you will have the opportunity to attend courses in person or online, where you can discuss various theoretical tasks with instructors, review situations that drivers may encounter, and go over the questions from Regitra's tests.

Theory test at Regitra

You can register for the exam online or by calling Regitra at +370 700 55 151. If you need an interpreter during the exam, make sure to register by phone or in person at one of Regitra's branches. When you arrive at Regitra at your scheduled time, don't forget to bring an identity document, a health certificate, and proof of first aid course completion. The exam fee is €10.

The theory exam can be taken in Lithuanian, English, or Russian through Regitra's computerized system. During the exam, you'll be filmed, and personal belongings like phones and cameras aren't allowed. For category B, the exam consists of 30 questions, with additional questions for other categories. To pass, you need to answer at least 80% of the questions correctly. You'll have one minute per question. Your results will be displayed immediately after you finish, and a passing score remains valid until you pass the practical exam, but no longer than one year.

Practical test (driving)

To prepare for the practical driving exam, you need to complete at least 30 required academic hours (for category B) at the chosen school, driving with an instructor. Once you’ve completed the lessons, you'll need to pass a school driving exam. Sometimes, 30 lessons might not be enough, so you can schedule extra lessons until you feel confident and ready for the school exam.

During the school exam, you'll practice parking maneuvers and driving on the street, in a similar format to the Regitra exam. This helps you identify areas where you might need more practice. If you're learning to drive with an automatic transmission, be sure to choose the same type of car for your Regitra exam as well.

Practical test at Regitra

You can register for the exam online or by calling Regitra at +370 700 55 151. If you need an interpreter during the practical exam, please register by phone or in person at a branch. You must inform Regitra in advance if an interpreter will be present, and in that case, the exam might be extended by 15 minutes. The practical exam fee is €41.26.

The exam will be filmed, and both the examiner and car are assigned randomly. At the beginning of the exam, you will be able to adjust the car's mirrors, seat belts, and seat and try driving. Before hitting the road, you'll be asked three questions about traffic safety and vehicle maintenance. The practical driving exam lasts up to 90 minutes and takes place on public streets under real traffic conditions. You'll also be asked to perform several maneuvers, and a 10-15 minute independent driving task, such as following navigation, will be included.

Exam Evaluation

During the practical driving exam, different types of errors can be recorded:

  • Non-critical – indicate insufficient skill level of the examinee but do not create potentially dangerous situations
  • Specific repetitive – six repeated non-critical errors
  • Critical – indicate high recklessness, low skill level, disrespect to other road users, creating a potentially dangerous situation

To pass the exam, no more than 8 non-critical errors are allowed, and no critical or specific repetitive errors are allowed.

After completing the designated route and returning to the Regitra lot, you will immediately find out whether you passed the exam and what type and number of errors you made. If you do not pass the exam on the first attempt, don't worry – you can take it again, but not earlier than seven days later.
