Traditional cuisine

Lithuanian cuisine is a delightful experience, with traditional dishes like the Lithuanian cold beet soup (known as šaltibarščiai). This refreshing soup is especially popular in summer and has been acclaimed as the tastiest cold soup in the world by some rankings. The Vilnius Pink Soup Festival is quickly becoming a beloved summer tradition in the capital. In 2024, four Lithuanian restaurants have been awarded One Michelin Star for their exceptional cuisine. Four others have earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand for their great quality and value. Additionally, one restaurant has received a Michelin Green Star for being a leader in sustainable gastronomy.  

The Lithuanian language

Lithuanians take immense pride in their language. Linguists are fascinated by Lithuanian because it is the oldest surviving Indo-European language, retaining many ancient features that have been lost in other languages.  Since Lithuania is a small country, Lithuanians are always impressed when tourists or foreigners living here learn to speak a bit of Lithuanian.
