Rental Accomodation

Renting a place in Lithuania is generally quite affordable compared to some of the older EU countries. Rent prices can vary a lot depending on where you’re looking—whether it’s in the city center or the suburbs, the size and condition of the flat, and even factors like heating type and the length of your rental agreement.

Average rental prices

In the three biggest cities (Vilnius, Kaunas, and Klaipėda) average rental prices vary between €270 in the suburbs to €700 plus utilities in the city center for a one-bedroom flat. Keep in mind, that prices tend to rise a bit before September when students come back to big cities. The rent can differ significantly in different areas and cities, prices in smaller towns normally are considerably, even several times, smaller.

In addition to the rent, you will also need to pay additional utility costs, such as for heating, water, electricity, and waste disposal. These costs may be included in the rent or billed separately.  You can check the average rental prices in different cities of Lithuania here.

Deposit

Additionally, your landlord might ask for a security deposit, usually equivalent to 1-3 months' rent. This deposit is intended to protect the landlord from potential losses due to damage or unpaid rent. The deposit will be paid back to you upon the contract's termination, as long as everything is in order with the flat.

Rental agreement

Before paying any money to a landlord, make sure to sign a rental agreement. This contract should clearly outline the rental terms and conditions, the furniture and items provided for your use, and the conditions for moving out. You can find sample agreements online to guide you. Having a written agreement helps ensure that both you and the landlord are on the same page and protects your rights. Be sure to sign the agreement in both English and Lithuanian.

Where to find rental properties?

You can find rental listings on sites like: Aruodas,Domoplius, Rebaltic, Skelbiu and others. Alternatively, you can contact real estate agencies that for a fee will find you a place to rent). You can also check out groups on Facebook like Apartments for rent in Vilnius, Butų nuoma be tarpininkų Vilniuje and others. Please be careful and don't pay anything before seeing the actual flat and the written agreement.

If you’re open to it, renting a room in a shared flat is a popular option, especially among young people. It’s a great way to meet new people, practice a new language, and experience different cultures.

Every permanent resident of Lithuania (including foreigners with a residence permit) has to declare residency in Lithuania. If you do it in a rented apartment, the owner must give written consent.
