Higher education in Lithuania is conducted in both Lithuanian and English across three cycles: Bachelors, Masters, and PhD. Admission procedures are straightforward: for bachelor’s and integrated programs, apply online through LAMA BPO (free of charge). Master’s programs accept applications directly through universities. Higher education institutions may charge a fee for processing admission documents and finalizing study agreements.
EU/EEA students, Lithuanian nationals living abroad, and individuals of Lithuanian descent can apply for state-funded study positions in Lithuania. Non-EU citizens and stateless individuals with residence permit in Lithuania, who have completed secondary education according to the Lithuanian program, can also apply for state-funded study places. Other non-EU citizens must finance their studies independently. International students can also apply for Lithuanian state scholarships.
If you are unable to secure a state-funded place or a scholarship, you will be required to pay tuition fees. These fees vary depending on the university, study program, and academic level. On average, tuition fees in Lithuania range from €2,500 to €5,000 per year for Bachelor’s degrees and €4,000 to €9,000 per year for Master’s degrees. Fees don’t differ significantly for EU and non-EU students – in many cases, they are actually the same.
The deadlines to apply for the autumn semester at most universities in Lithuania are usually in June. However, it’s advisable for international students to apply early, in order to obtain a temporary residence permit based on studies in a timely manner. Once accepted, you'll receive a Letter of Acceptance with further instructions for finalizing your admission.
Most universities offer on-campus housing options, with dormitories located near or further from the campus. Public transport is available to reach universities not directly adjacent to dorms.
Students in Lithuania enjoy discounts at various places, including restaurants, museums, public transport, and select shops. To access all discounts, you'll need either a Lithuanian Student Identity Card or an International Student Identity Card (ISIC).
International students can work in Lithuania while studying without needing a work permit, as long as they have a temporary residence permit for their studies.
Non-EU students who finish their studies in Lithuania can apply for a temporary residence permit that’s valid for 12 months. This allows them to search for a job, start working, or even become self-employed. With this permit, they can begin working right away once they find a job—no extra permits needed.
