Recognition of Foreign Qualifications

If you want to study or work in Lithuania, you may need to have your foreign education or qualifications recognized. This process ensures that your foreign qualifications meet the general requirements for similar qualifications in Lithuania. There are two types of recognition: academic recognition and professional recognition. 

Diploma Recognition

If you plan to study in Lithuania, academic recognition is usually done by higher education institutions. You can find a list of institutions authorized to recognize foreign qualifications and additional information on the recognition system in Lithuania here

Who can recognize your diploma?

Make sure you have the following documentation ready: qualification documentation (diploma and diploma supplement), proof of ID (passport), proof of name change (if applicable). All documents issued in languages other than English or Lithuanian should be provided with an official translation. Documents issued in English or Lithuanian do not require a translation. The recognition of foreign education/qualifications should be completed within a month of submitting all documents and is free of charge. Each foreign qualification is individually assessed for academic recognition based on the available information. Professional Recognition

If you want to work in a specific field in Lithuania, you might need professional recognition. This process evaluates not only your professional qualifications but also your knowledge and skills to ensure they are sufficient for the relevant activities in Lithuania. 

Types of Professions

  • Regulated Professions: For regulated professions, a government-authorized institution in Lithuania handles the professional recognition of foreign qualifications. You can find the list of regulated professions and authorized institutions here.
  • Non-Regulated Professions: For non-regulated professions, the employer decides on the recognition of your qualifications.
